This collection of Ernst Junger's early prose, which includes short stories and essays from the 1920s and 1930s, gives an opportunity to see how the worldview of the writer was formed in the days between the two world wars. During this period of time, Junger managed to serve several years in the general staff, study philosophy and zoology at the university, and become the most prominent publicist of the Conservative revolution. All these facets of his life were reflected in his books. Sometimes Junger appears on their pages as a fiery revolutionary, sometimes as a detached aesthete and intellectual, but the best thing he does is to remain himself and preserve his own special style. This feature can be expressed in a paradox: Junger's life resembles an action novel, and at the same time, all his works resemble the most interesting diary.
