Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (1867–1951) successfully led the armed forces and the country during the period of gaining independence, the formation of the state and during the years of global military-political conflicts that threatened the very foundations of Finland's existence. He is the man who made the most significant contribution to the country's sovereignty. The first volume of his memoirs deals with the beginnings of Baron Mannerheim's career, his participation in the Russo-Japanese and World Wars, his reconnaissance trip to Asia, the revolution in Russia and the Finnish War of Independence, the author's participation in the formation of the domestic and foreign policy of independent Finland, as well as his hunting trips.
