Gilles by Drier la Rochelle is one of the most controversial novels in French literature. It seems to combine the misanthropy and intolerance of Céline, the cynicism of Maupassant, and the intellectualism of Camus.
This is the story of a young man who returns from the front of the First World War and tries in vain to find his place in post-war society: in unsuccessful romances with women, political circles and intellectual wanderings (which accompany geographical wanderings: from the harsh landscapes of Normandy to the suffocation of the African coast). But when he meets only disappointment everywhere, Gilles is converted to the most radical and uncompromising ideology of his time.
Someone will find realistic descriptions of the front of the First World War and the Spanish Civil War in the novel. Someone will sympathize with Gilles or hate him for his inability to have a sincere relationship with a woman. Someone will be interested in political intrigues and ideological disputes in France in the 1920s and 1930s. It is only obvious that few will leave this novel about another lost generation indifferent.
