Demonology is the comprehension of the dark, bizarre, and otherworldly in folk beliefs. This edition presents three classic perspectives on Ukrainian demonology: historian Volodymyr Antonovych, who studied documents of witch trials; ethnographer Volodymyr Hnatiuk, who researched folk tales about evil spirits; and writer and folklorist Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky, who sought to integrate Ukrainian mythology into a broader European context. From tales of mermaids, forest spirits, and werewolves to stories of witches being burned in Ukrainian villages, these scholarly works convey the spirit of their time, when magical thinking was not yet considered mere superstition, and belief in witchcraft was widespread and sincere.
