This volume contains the biographies of twelve figures from Hellas and Rome: rulers, commanders, thinkers, and freedom fighters. Specifically, the Spartan king Agesilaus, the Athenian general Cimon, and the Roman military leader Gaius Marius. The longest chapter is dedicated to Pompey the Great and his role in the civil war.
Of particular note is the biography of Cato the Elder — a political figure who embodied the philosophy of Stoicism and whose name became a symbol of modesty and adherence to morality in politics.
