"Marko the Cursed" is one of the few examples of Gothic prose in Ukrainian classical literature. Oleksa Storozhenko drew inspiration from folklore, so in his unique manner, he wrote about devils, witches, and Cossack shamans.
The story of Marko the Cursed in folk beliefs is the story of a sinful, lazy Cossack who ends up in hell and gets a chance to atone for his sins by saving other Cossacks. In Oleksa Storozhenko's literary rendition, this legend acquires artistic and bloodthirsty features, becoming truly Gothic and unsettling to the mind. His Marko is an outcast, nourished by bird's blood, who is condemned to wander the earth forever for his sins.
