"The Chrysanthemum and the Sword: Patterns of Japanese Culture" is a study by American anthropologist Ruth Benedict (1887-1948), who
commissioned by the US government, she studied the culture, traditions, and ideology of militaristic Japan during World War II. The researcher delved into the worldview and everyday life of the Japanese to find answers to questions that troubled the Old and New Worlds.

Why were Japanese children placed on their feet in the shape of hieroglyphs while they slept, and how did this shape the social roles of men and women in adulthood? Why did the Japanese accept the American occupation so easily after losing a war in which their brutality shocked the West? How did they really feel about the Emperor, whose role might have seemed ceremonial?

All of this is covered in a study that was supposed to help understand Japan at war, but it accomplished a much broader task: to understand Japan.

The book "Chrysanthemum and the Sword" is being published in Ukrainian for the first time.
