Götz (Gottfried) von Berlichingen is a knight with a temperament too violent and sharp even for early modern Germany. Almost fifty years of his life were spent in endless wars - for the emperor and for the rebels, for the aristocrats against the city communities, for some counts and dukes against others and vice versa, against the Turks, the Swiss and the French. He fought against bishoprics and tried to tax entire cities, caught merchants on the beaten paths and stirred up fights at imperial congresses, was captured and demanded ransoms for prisoners. Ultimately, Berlichingen became the archetypal image of the "robber baron," with such classics of German literature as Goethe and Gerhard Hauptmann addressing him with opposing assessments, and during World War II, a Panzergrenadier division was named in his honor.

Your attention is presented with the memoirs of Götz (Gottfried) von Berlichingen, which he dictated in his old age, and do not be confused by the author's self-justifying passages, because with them he wants to somewhat cover up the stormy era in which he had to live to the fullest.
