“Who is a hero and why is he needed?” — this is the question asked by the author of this book, Thomas Carlyle, at a time of general fascination with a purely materialistic approach to historical development. However, in contrast to the concepts of the economic development of social relations, Carlyle offers his own view of history — heroic vitalism.
He does not call factories, joint-stock companies, and trade unions the engines of society, but specific individuals who, through their genius, their courage, and their self-dedication, give humanity the impetus for new achievements. Like Plutarch in Comparative Lives, Carlyle singles out archetypes of heroes through certain individuals—rulers, thinkers, religious figures, and even mythical deities.
This book will be informative reading for anyone interested in history and the role of the individual in it.
