The book by the Polish writer, journalist and traveler Ferdinand Ossendowski describes the events of the Russian Civil War and the long odyssey of returning home to the free land. His path lies through the icy taiga, difficult-to-pass swamps and passes, as well as past numerous communist detachments that roam these lands, bringing blood and death. In addition, on his way there is an army fighting against the Reds, and spirits protecting this land from encroachments. In the capital, Ossendowski personally meets the Living Buddha, and also spends time with the "bloody baron", becoming one of the few witnesses to the flowering of the short period of existence of Bogdo Khan's Mongolia.
