A collection of 30 short stories by Léon Bloy, a soldier in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. At the age of 24, the young writer volunteered to serve on the front lines. Over the course of two years, he wrote short stories based on his experiences and observations, creating a vivid and brutal portrait of that war. The text’s characteristic expressionism and naturalism in depicting reality are intertwined with a reflection on the sacrifices of his comrades and a critique of the French bourgeoisie for betraying the interests of their own state. This book also offers a nuanced portrayal of French identity, which has consistently resisted attempts to be crushed by an external enemy.
