Drollery are humorous yet grotesque illustrations found in the margins of medieval manuscripts. They were popular from the 13th to the 18th centuries. As a rule, these illustrations had no connection to the text itself and were intended purely for entertainment.
“Butt pipes” are a humorous motif in medieval marginal art, particularly in illuminated manuscripts. In these whimsical depictions, figures play musical instruments using or through their buttocks, reflecting the medieval love of grotesque humor and satire. They were often used as a symbol of folly, sin, or chaos.
