Drolers are humorous but grotesque images in the margins of medieval manuscripts. They were popular from the 13th to the 18th centuries. As a rule, these images had no relation to the text itself and were intended for entertainment.
One of the popular themes of medieval humor was the so-called “upside down world.” That is why hares, usually associated with cowardice, helplessness, and kindness, appear strong, brave, and even cruel in the margins of manuscripts.
