Drollery—humorous yet grotesque illustrations in the margins of medieval manuscripts. They were popular from the 13th to the 18th centuries. As a rule, these illustrations had no connection to the text itself and were intended purely for entertainment.
One of the popular themes of medieval humor was the so-called “upside-down world.” That is why hares—which are usually associated with timidity, helplessness, and kindness—appear in the margins of manuscripts as strong, brave, and even cruel.
