Salad (German: Schaller) is a combat helmet of European knights and warriors of the late Middle Ages. It replaced the bascinet in Western and Northern Europe in the mid-15th century. It was especially widespread in the German lands. It was made by masters of Nuremberg and Augsburg, where it became practically universal. It was worn by both mounted knights and infantry, especially crossbowmen.
During World War I, the past popularity of the salad influenced the design of the German steel helmet - the Stahlhelm.
