Boat burials were common among the ancient Scandinavians and some other Germanic tribes. The deceased was placed in a boat along with weapons, jewelry, or animal sacrifices, and the boat was either buried in a burial mound or set afloat, sometimes by setting fire to it. This rite symbolized a journey to the afterlife, and the boat served as a "transport" between the worlds.
