“The Wound Man” is an anatomical manual in the form of an engraving depicting a naked male body covered with various wounds. It is not merely a drawing, but a medieval medical “index.” Next to each wound—whether caused by an arrow, a sword, a snake bite, or a bee sting—were numbers or captions. These directed the physician to the page in the text describing the medication and treatment for that specific injury. Original historical copies of such engravings and drawings date back to the 14th century.
