Tavria, Tavriania, also Crimea - the historical name of the Crimean peninsula, comes from the name of the Taurians. Strabo divided all of Tavria into Greater and Lesser. The modern Kerch Peninsula is called Lesser Chersonese. Tavria is known in mythology in connection with the myth of Iphigenia. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Tavria was the name of the Tavria province, created in 1802. It included the territories of the modern Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the southern parts of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. This name existed until 1918.
