Slobodskaya Ukraine or Slobodzhanskaya Ukraine is a historical and geographical region and ethno-cultural region in the eastern part of Ukraine and the border regions of the Russian Federation, the territory of which overlaps approximately with the territory of the five Slobodskaya Cossack regiments of the 17th–18th centuries, autonomous formations within the Moscow Kingdom, and later the Russian Empire. Slobodskaya Ukraine bordered in the west with the Hetmanate, in the south with Zaporozhye and the possessions of the Crimean Khanate, in the east with the Don, in the north with Muscovy. It occupied part of the Middle Uplands and the neighboring Donetsk Lowland, the northeastern part of the Dnieper Lowland and a small part of the Donetsk Ridge. In its modern borders, it encompasses the central-southern part of Sumy Oblast, Kharkiv Oblast, the northern part of Luhansk Oblast and the northeastern part of Donetsk Oblast, the western, eastern, and southern parts of Belgorod Oblast, the southern part of Voronezh Oblast, and the western part of Kursk Oblast. Currently, parts of Slobozhanshchyna are part of the Russian Federation.
