Galicia is a historical and geographical region of western Ukraine, which also included the territories once inhabited mainly by Ukrainians, Nadsyany and Lemko. There are several interpretations of the territory of Galicia. The name "Galicia" comes from the city of Halych - the capital of the Galician Principality. From the second half of the 13th century, the city of Lviv became the political and cultural center of the region. Galicia had both its own statehood - the Galician Principality, and was part of various states. Due to the partial liberalization of national policy in Austria-Hungary after the "Spring of Nations" of 1848, Eastern Galicia became a center for the development of Ukrainian and Polish culture, literature and science, while in sub-Russian Ukraine a policy of strict Russification and discrimination against Ukrainian culture was carried out. Because of this, Eastern Galicia was called the "Ukrainian Piedmont".
