Donetsk region, also Donetsk region - a historical and geographical region of Ukraine, covering the basin of the Seversky Donets River and taking its name from it. Within Ukraine, Donetsk region covers most of Donetsk Oblast without the Azov Sea and most of Luhansk Oblast without its northern part, which belongs to Eastern Slobozhanshchyna. However, there are no clear borders of Donetsk region. The eastern part of Kharkiv Oblast simultaneously belongs to the historical region of Slobodsk Ukraine, and geographically - Donetsk region. It was in the district of modern Kharkiv on the upper Donets that the centers of ancient Donetsk region existed from the Neolithic, Alan-Khazar rule to the Rus' chronicle city of Donets, which existed within the borders of modern Kharkiv. The industrial region - Donbas, whose name comes from the Donetsk coal basin, is partially located on the territory of Donetsk region.
