Halychyna is a historical and geographical region in western Ukraine, which also included territories once predominantly inhabited by Ukrainians, such as Nadsiannia and Lemkivshchyna. There are several interpretations of Halychyna's territory. The name "Halychyna" comes from the city of Halych, the capital of the Principality of Halych. From the second half of the 13th century, Lviv became the political and cultural center of the region. Halychyna had its own statehood – the Principality of Halych – and was also part of various states. Due to the partial liberalization of national policy in Austria-Hungary after the "Spring of Nations" in 1848, Eastern Halychyna became a center for the development of Ukrainian and Polish culture, literature, and science, while in Russian-controlled Ukraine, a policy of harsh Russification and discrimination against Ukrainian culture was pursued. Because of this, Eastern Halychyna earned the name "Ukrainian Piedmont."
