Donbas, also Donetsk region, is a historical and geographical region of Ukraine, encompassing the Siversky Donets River basin and deriving its name from it. Within Ukraine, the Donbas covers most of the Donetsk region, excluding the Azov Sea coast, and most of the Luhansk region, excluding its northern part, which belongs to Eastern Slobozhanshchyna. However, the exact borders of the Donbas are not clearly defined. The eastern part of the Kharkiv region simultaneously belongs to the historical region of Sloboda Ukraine and the geographical region of Donbas. It was in the vicinity of modern Kharkiv, on the upper Donets, that ancient centers of Donbas existed from the Neolithic period, through Alanian-Khazar rule, to the Ruthenian chronicle city of Donets, which existed within the borders of modern Kharkiv. The industrial region of Donbas, whose name comes from the Donets Coal Basin, is partially located on the territory of the Donbas.
