Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (1867–1951) successfully led the armed forces and the country during the period of gaining independence, the formation of the state and during the years of global military-political conflicts that threatened the very foundations of Finland's existence. He is the man who made the most significant contribution to the country's sovereignty. The second volume of his memoirs deals with the complex vicissitudes of the formation and financing of the Finnish Defence Forces, the fierce confrontation with a much more powerful eastern enemy during the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1944), and the difficulties of the post-war political settlement of the country.
